The Newbery Medal is awarded to the year's most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. It was first awarded way back in 1922! The very first winner was The Story of Mankind
by Hendrik Willem Van Loon followed in 1923 by The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle
by Hugh Loftin.
With the 2011 winners having just been announced Tragic thought it would be a nice to publish a list of all of the winners back to the very beginning -amazing how many of the titles are still familiar and almost every single one has enjoyed numerous reprints.
It must be a real buzz for this years winner, Clare Vanderpool, to think that her book will still be in print, or at least available in the form that future generations digest their literature, in a hundred years time.

Crispin: The Cross of Lead
by Avi Publisher Comments
"Asta's son" is all he's ever been called. The lack of name is appropriate, because he and his mother are but poor peasants in fourteenth-century medieval England. But this thirteen-year-old boy who thought he had little to lose soon finds himself with even less no home, family, or possessions. Accused of a crime he did not commit, he has been declared a "wolf's head." That means he may be killed on sight, by anyone.

A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park Publisher Comments
Tree-ear, an orphan, has become fascinated with the potters' craft; he wants nothing more than to watch master potter Min at work, and he dreams of making a pot of his own someday. When Min takes on Tree-ear as his helper, Tree-ear is elated — until he finds obstacles in his path: the backbreaking labor of digging and hauling clay, Min's irascible temper, and his own ignorance. However, Tree-ear is determined to prove himself. (read more)
